Join Dorman as a Mechanical Engineer, where you will spearhead innovative engineering projects to enhance and support our diverse product lines. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, you will play a key role in evaluating and documenting product features, ensuring superior function, quality, and reliability at every stage. Primary Duties
-Collaborate closely with product line managers and procurement teams to develop products through methodical reverse engineering practices, ensuring design accuracy and market relevance.
-Generate comprehensive product documentation that clearly captures dimensional and performance specifications, facilitating seamless communication across engineering and manufacturing stages.
-Lead the creation, coordination, and fabrication of prototype samples and specialized test equipment to validate design concepts and functional capabilities.
-Engage with multidisciplinary product teams to plan and execute design modifications, managing updates systematically to maintain product integrity and compliance.
-Oversee Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) requirements, thoroughly reviewing related documentation and interpreting test results to confirm adherence to functional, reliability, and quality standards.
-Analyze process certifications and flowcharts to detect process inefficiencies or risks, proposing and implementing corrective actions to optimize manufacturing workflows.
-Develop and uphold rigorous incoming and source inspection protocols, ensuring all components meet established quality guidelines before production integration.
-Investigate product warranty data and root cause analyses of quality issues, driving continuous design and process improvements that enhance customer satisfaction and product durability.
-Promote knowledge sharing and teamwork across engineering and operational departments, contributing to a culture of innovation and quality excellence.
-Perform additional duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and commitment to supporting company objectives.
Qualifications
-Proven experience in reverse engineering or new product development demonstrating the ability to innovate and improve existing designs.
-Expert proficiency in SolidWorks or alternative CAD platforms, with strong skills in 3D modeling and technical drafting practices.
-Comprehensive understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to create and interpret detailed technical drawings.
-Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for data analysis and Access for database management.
-Familiarity with Enterprise Product Data Management (EPDM) or comparable Product Data Management (PDM) systems to efficiently organize and control engineering documentation.
-Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, stamping, casting, injection molding, and electronics assembly, enabling practical and cost-effective design solutions.
-Basic technical knowledge of automotive mechanical and electrical systems to support product relevance and integration.
-Experience working effectively in cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration and leveraging diverse expertise to achieve project goals.
-Physical ability to safely lift items up to 20 pounds, with the capability to perform tasks requiring reach, swivel, and mobility across work areas.
-Comfortable working under typical industrial noise levels, maintaining focus and communication in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
Education / Experience
-A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline, accompanied by at least 3 years of progressive engineering experience in manufacturing or product development environments.
-Alternatively, an Associate degree combined with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience providing a solid foundation in engineering principles and practical application.
-Professional development courses or certifications related to CAD software, quality systems, or manufacturing processes will be considered advantageous.
